Without Conscience or Remorse

Track 08 · Second Sight

Told through the alternating voices of an autonomous drone and the soldier it's hunting, Without Conscience or Remorse confronts the moral vacuum at the centre of remote, mechanised warfare. One voice carries out its mission without emotion or free will; the other is still human enough to feel the weight of what's closing in on him, and to know exactly how far from home that fear has carried him.

The bridge asks the question the whole song is built around — when the line between soldier and machine blurs this far, who is left to answer for what happens next?

Sonus Lucis — Without Conscience or Remorse

I have a mission, I was made to kill
No emotion here, or any free will
One job to do, one flag to set
I will do this all with no regret

I have a mission, I was trained to kill
Strong my emotions, they bend to my will
Ordered forward, moving slow
There are many more bloody miles to go

Without a conscience or any remorse
How can there be a moral course?
Soldiers forced to march in vain
And die by a trigger without a brain

I search for targets within my grid
No human hides from my cold bid
My lens is focused, my quarry locked
Closing in to deal the shot

Now I find I'm far from home
What brought me here to die alone?
Tears I shed it is obscene
My life will end by cold machine

Blur the line against this murder
Conscience gone, no one's to blame
We can't commit to this as normal
Our humanity no more to claim

Without a conscience or any remorse
How can there be a moral course?
Soldiers forced to march in vain
And die by a trigger without a brain

Without a conscience or any remorse
How can there be a moral course?
Soldiers forced to march in vain
And die by a trigger without a brain
