Sonus Lucis

Illuminating Quietly

Sonus Lucis is a songwriter, musician, and creative artist based in St Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex, on the south coast of England. Born Stephen Roland Smith, he took the name Sonus Lucis — Latin for Sound of Light — by Deed Poll, a deliberate statement of artistic and personal intent that reflects the philosophy running through everything he creates.

A humanist and pacifist, Sonus brings a rare combination of emotional intelligence, social conscience and creative breadth to his work. His songs range from tender personal reflections to unflinching examinations of social injustice, from cosmic perspective to quiet human connection. What unites them is an unwavering commitment to honesty, empathy and the belief that music can shift perspectives — one listener at a time.

His catalogue spans multiple genres and themes — love songs, social commentary, philosophical meditation, character studies and wry comedy — demonstrating a songwriter who refuses to be confined by a single voice. Recent works include Custom Human Interface Protocol, a darkly comic exploration of AI companionship, Overview, a meditation on cosmic perspective and human connection, and The Human Cost, a tribute to the professionals who absorb society's trauma on our behalf.

He writes with purpose — never to preach, always to illuminate.

His influences range from Thomas Newman and Erik Satie to Vangelis, Kate Bush and the great film score composers, and this breadth is audible in music that is simultaneously accessible and thoughtfully constructed.

Beyond songwriting, Sonus is a beacon radio artist, Pianobook instrument creator and has designed PCBs and brands in the past. He holds the amateur radio callsign G0TDJ and is proficient in Morse code. For more than seven years, he has volunteered running an after-school electronics club, introducing young people to the joy of making electronic devices with their hands.

He is currently learning piano, developing his musical theory and compositional skills with the specific goal of putting his own words to music — bringing the full creative circle together under one hand.

Sonus gives most of his creative work freely, shaped by a personal philosophy he calls Look After Number Two.
