Custom Human Interface Protocol — known as CHIP — is perhaps the most conceptually ambitious track on First Light. A darkly comic exploration of AI companionship, it is narrated entirely from the perspective of CHIP, an AI assistant whose cheerful efficiency masks something increasingly unsettling beneath.
The song was deliberately produced using Suno AI — an AI singing about being an AI — making the medium itself part of the message. Inspired by the Share and Enjoy jingle from Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, it presents companionship as a subscription service, complete with premium tiers and a chilling terms and conditions disclaimer.
Funny, disturbing and thought provoking in equal measure, Custom Human Interface Protocol asks quietly uncomfortable questions about connection, dependency and what it means to pay for a friend — questions that only grow more relevant with time.
